Chemistry: Chapter 10 Flashcards
what is Avogadro’s number?
6.02 x 10^23 representative particles (atoms, formula units, or molecules)
what are atoms?
singular elements
what are formula units?
ionic compounds
what are molecules?
covalent compounds
how to convert moles to the number of atoms?
6.02x10^23 moles (of the compound/element) to the number of the compound / element atoms (ex. CO2 = 3 atoms)
how to find molar mass
find the amu in each element and add them up
what is the measurement of molar volume?
22.4 Liters
what to use to find the mass?
molar mass
what to use to find the number of particles?
Avogadro’s number
what to use to find the volume of a gas at STP?
22.4 liters
how to find % composition? (3)
- find the molar mass of the individual elements
- find total molar mass of the compound
- divide the element’s molar mass by the total mass
how to find the empirical formula? (3)
*percent of the element = number of grams of the element
- given grams (%) of element x (1mole of element / amu of the element)
- use the lowest number of moles and divide that by each of the elements’ moles
- apply the ratio to the formula
how to find molecular formula?
given determined molar mass / empirical formula mass
the result of that equation is what you use to multiply the empirical formula’s subscripts by
