Chapter 7 A Flashcards
What is memory?
A cognitive system
What is the purpose of memory?
Encodes
Stores
retrieves information
linked to learning
Memory isn’t like a a recording of a video, but it is..
An interpretive process involving retrieving and reconstruction information .
What does memory require?
Conscious thought
Encoding?
modifying information to fit the format of a memory system.
like a CD being transferred to an iPod
Storage?
Holding information overtime so they may be used.
Access and Retrieval?
Access = locating stored information Retrieval = information form that stored memory
Where is sensory memory stored?
As working memory and or as long-term memory
What is the first stage in storying sensory memory?
Sensory register: after image in the form of neural activity
What is the capacity of a sensory memory register?
12+ items and only last for a few seconds
working memory ( Short-Term Memory)?
Holds recently perceived events for a very short time
Useful for problem solving ( you would remember the question of the test you are working on)
What is the capacity of working memory?
5-9 items and last approximately 1 minute
Chunking?
Organizing memories into smaller and more meaningful units of information
Maintenance rehearsal?
repeating or renewing information to keep it from fading away
Elaborate rehearsal?
actively reviewing information in working memory and deliberately finding connection to information already stored in long term memory
What is the capacity of long term memory?
has no capacity
long term memory?
stores information in an organized fashion, according to its meaning
What is declarative memory apart of and what is it?
- long term memory
- stores explicate information ( facts)
What are the subdivisions of declarative memory?
Episodic memory- memories for personal experience or events
Semantic memory: general knowledge- stuff learned at school
Procedural memory: memories about how to do things
what does memory retrieval rely on?
cues
Eidetic memory:
exceptionally clear and persistent form of long-term memory
Flashbulb memory?
extremely clear, vivid memory for a specific meaningful or emotional event ( when JFK was assassinated)
- no more accurate that a regular memory and decay over time in the same way
