Chapter 12b: Flashcards
Emotions help us to…
Respond to important situations
convey our intention to others
What is the four-part process to emotions?
- ) Physiological arousal ( nervous system signals the release of neural transmitters)
- ) Cognitive interpretation ( Thinking about how your feeling)
- ) Subjective feelings ( How does it feel to have what ever emotion it may be)
- ) Behavioral expressions (smiling, yelling)
Why do emotions exist?
emotions have survival value and have been shaped by natural selection.
Biological mechanisms of emotions include:
The limbic system
The cerebral cortex
The autonomic nervous system
Hormones
Emotion occurs through two neuroscience pathway ways:
Unconscious emotional processing: - quick response to cues before consciousness - brain circuitry that operates automatically -acts as an early warning system AUTMOTAIC NUERAL PATHWAY: slower generation of emotion relies on cerebral cortex allows for anticipatory emotions
James Lange Theory:
stimulus –> physiological response –> emotion
see a spider –> sweet, shake, cry –> fear
Cannon-bard theory:
emotional feeling and physiological response occur at the same time.
see a spider, get sweaty and faster pulse, fearful simultaneously
Two-Factor-Theory?
Emotion results from cognitive appraisal of both:
1.) physical arousal and
2.) emotion provoking stimulus
see the spider, get sweaty and faster heartbeat, and recognize spiders are scary; therefor you are afraid
Sensation seekers:
these people need a higher level of stimulation to perform at their best
As task level increases what happens to physiological stimulation
decreases.
