Chapter 5: Integumentary System Flashcards
List the functions of the integumentary system.
Functions: Protection Prevention of water loss Temp Regulation Metabolic Regulation Immune Defense Sensory Reception Excretion/Secretion
List the layers of the integumentary system
Epidermis
Dermis
Hypodermis
What structures are considered part of the integumentary system?
Skin Hair Nails Sweat Glands Sebaceous Glands
Thick Skin vs Thin Skin
Thick skin - no hair, sweat glands only, all 5 epidermal strata, ranges from 400 to 600 micrometers
i.e. palms and soles of feet
Thin Skin - lacks stratum lucidum, covers most of the body, contains hair, sebaceous and sweat glands
Name 3 factors that influence skin color.
Hemoglobin
Melanin - pigment
Carotene - comes from diet
Name 3 types of skin markings.
Nevus - moles
Freckles
Hemangioma - red birth marks; pooling of red blood vessels
What are lines of cleavage in the skin?
Tension lines caused by the predominant orientation of collagen fiber bundles.
Cut the skin perpendicular to these times and it creates scaring that recoils (TKA scars) but cut with these lines and the skin heals quicker with less scar appearance.
Nails come from what skin layer?
Stratum corneum
Functions of Hair
Protection Heat retention Facial expression Sensory reception Visual identification Chemical signal dispersal
What happens in the “Aging Integument”
skin repair takes longer
skin becomes less resilient
skin immune response is diminished
skin becomes drier
skin and hair pigmentation becomes altered
sweat production decreases
blood supply reduces = impaired thermoregulation
hair thinning and loss
vit D production decreases
develop skin cancers (most common type of cancer)
Other integumentary glands (2)
Ceruminous glands - ear wax
Mammary glands
List the 5 layers of the epidermis in order from superficial to deep.
List the 2 layers of the dermis in order from superficial to deep.
Stratum: CLGSB “California Ladies Get SunBurned”
Epidermis Stratum corneum Stratum lucidum Stratum granulosum Stratum spinosum Stratum basale
Dermis
Papillary layer
Reticular layer
What is another name for skin?
Cutaneous membrane
List the 5 components of the dermis.
- Sweat Glands
- Hair Follicles
- Sensory Nerves
- Muscular Tissue
- Various Fibers (collagen, etc.)
Be able to identify the structures in the integumentary diagrams.
