Basic Arthrology Flashcards
1
Q
Discuss mobility vs stability.
A
As mobility increases, stability decreases. (And vice versa)
2
Q
List and discuss the 3 types of cartilage.
A
- Hyaline cartilage
- articular cartilage
- covers the end of long bones - Fibrocartilage
- shock absorber
- mensicus, pubic symphysis, intervertebral discs - Elastic cartilage
- flexible, found in ears
3
Q
How are joints classified?
A
They are classified by structure or function.
4
Q
List the functional classifications of joints. (3)
A
- Synarthrosis - immovable (sutures of the skull)
- Amphiarthrosis - slightly moveable (between radius/ulna)
- Diarthrosis - freely moveable (shoulder, hip)
- any joint that is synovial is a diarthrosis joint
5
Q
List the classification of joints by structure. (3)
A
- Fibrous Joint - joints held together by fibrous connective tissue
- Cartilaginous joints - joints joined by cartilage
- Synovial Joints - fluid filled synovial cavity; bones enclosed within capsule
6
Q
Discuss the types of fibrous joints. (3)
A
- Suture - between bones of skull
- Syndesmosis - bones joint by long strands of connective tissue (interosseous membrane between radius and ulna)
- Gomphosis - teeth and mandible/maxilla
7
Q
Discuss the types of cartilaginous joints. (2)
A
- Synchondroses - immobile joints with bones joined by cartilage (ribs and sternum)
- Symphyses - slight mobility with a pad of fibrocartilage between articulating bones (pubic symphysis)
8
Q
List the components of a synovial joint
A
- Articular capsule
- Joint cavity
- Synovial fluid
- Articular cartilage
- Ligaments (intrinsic and extrinsic)
- Nerves
- Blood vessels
9
Q
List the types of joints that are nonaxial.
A
- plane joint
10
Q
List the types of joints that uniaxial.
A
- hinge joint
- pivot joint
11
Q
List the types of joints that biaxial.
A
- condyloid joint
- saddle joint
12
Q
List the types of joints that multiaxial/triaxial.
A
- ball and socket joint
13
Q
Discuss the following pathology terms: Fracture Dislocation Subluxation Sprain Strain Bursitis Tenosynovitis Synovitis Capsulitis
A
Fracture: break in bone Dislocation: joint coming apart Subluxation: partial dislocation Sprain: injury to ligament Strain: injury to muscle or tendon Bursitis: inflammation of a bursa Tenosynovitis: inflammation of synovial sheath around tendons Synovitis: inflammation of synovial joint Capsulitis: inflammation of capsule
