Chapter 10 Photosynthesis Flashcards
Photosynthesis
Process plants use to take CO2, H20 and sunlight to make carbohydrate (sugars) and O2
Photosynthesis formula
nCO2 + nH20 + Photons –> (CH2O)n (carbohydrates) + nO2
2 stages of photosynthesis
Light dependent reactions
Dark reactions
Light reactions
Take place in thylakoid membrane
Requires continuous supply of light
This is where cholorophylls absorb light energy and it is converted into chemical energy through the ofrmation of ATP and NADPH
Water molecules are also converted to oxygen gas
NADPH
Reducing agent like NADH with an extra phosphate group
Calvin Cycle
Takes in ATP and NADPH and CO2 and produces PGAL, G3P
Phosphoglyseraldehyde
Takes place in stroma and does not require light
Uses the ATP and NADPH from lighjt dependent reactions to fix carbon dioxide and produce 3 carbon sugars G3P which join up to form glucose
Phosphoglyseraldehyde
3 carbons with a phosphate group attached
Used to produce carbohydrates like glucose
Mesophyll
Cells in a middle layer of lead tissue called the mesophyll are primary site of photosynthesis
Stomata
Small pores on the surface of leaves that let carbon dioxide diffuse into the mesophyll layer and oxygen diffuse out.
Chloroplasts
Organelles in the mesophyll cell that are specialized to carryo ut the reactions of photosynthesis
Thylakoids
Disc-like structures in choloroplasts that contain chlorophylls in the membrane
Chlorophylls
Green colored pigments in the membrane of thylakoid that absorb light
grana
stacks of thylakoids
stroma
fluid filled space around the grana
photosystems
large complexes of proteins and pigments that are optimized to harvest a key role in light reactions
