C9.3 - Anaerobic Respiration (Finished) Flashcards
Why would muscles use anaerobic respiration?
When you do vigorous exercise and your body can’t supply enough oxygen to muscles, they start doing anaerobic respiration as well as aerobic respiration
What is anaerobic respiration?
Respiration which takes place without oxygen, in which glucose is incompletely broken down to lactic acid
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose -> lactic acid
What happens in anaerobic respiration?
Glucose is broken down into lactic acid
Why is anaerobic respiration only useful in emergencies?
Anaerobic respiration foes not transfer as much energy as aerobic respiration as glucose isn’t fully oxidised (doesn’t combine with oxygen). It also builds up lactic acid in the muscles
What is muscle fatigue?
Muscle fatigue is when the muscles get tired and stop retracting efficiently, caused by long periods of exercise, and by the build up of lactic acid
What is an oxygen debt?
An oxygen debt is the amount of extra oxygen your body needs to react with the build up of lactic acid and remove it from the cells
What does oxygen form when it reacts with lactic acid?
CO2 and water
Why is there an oxygen debt after exercising with anaerobic respiration?
Anaerobic respiration produces lactic acid and is done as there is not enough oxygen supply. After you stop exercising, the body needs to continue to take in oxygen to react with the lactic acid, and produce harmless co2 and water, removing it
How other than oxygen debt can the body cope with high levels of lactic acid?
The blood that enters the muscles transports lactic acid to the liver, where it is converted back to glucose
How does your body react to an oxygen debt?
You will keep breathing hard and your heart will keep pumping fast to “repay” the oxygen debt even after you stop exercising
What do plants and yeast cells produce when respiring anaerobically?
They produce ethanol and carbon dioxide instead of lactic acid
Why is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in a plant or yeast cell?
Glucose -> ethanol + carbon dioxide
What is anaerobic respiration in yeast cells called?
Fermentation
Why is fermentation really useful in the food and drink industry?
Fermentation can be used to make bread and alcoholic drinks. The carbon dioxide produced is used to make bread rise in bread baking and the ethanol produced is used to make ber and wine
