B1.1 - The World of The Microscope (Finished) Flashcards
What is standard magnification of an eye piece lens in a light microscope?
It is normally x10 in light microscopes.
What is the definition of resolution.
Resolution is how well you can tell the difference between 2 points.
What do you do to find the image size.
Actual image size x magnification.
How many nanometres Ina micrometre?
1000
How many micrometres in a millimetre?
1000
What are the missing microscope parts?
Eyepiece, fine focus, ________, light, _____, slide, ________
Coarse focus, objective lens, stage
How do you calculate the magnification of a microscope?
Multiply the magnification of the eyepiece and the magnification of the objective lens
Remember the I AM triangle, I = A * M
Image size = magnification * actual size
What is the resolving power of a light microscope in nm?
About 200 nm
What is and advantage and disadvantage of an electron microscope?
Advantage - Very high magnification
- Resolving power of 0.2 nm
- Shows 3D images for scanning ones
Disadvantage - Very expensive
- Very large
- Must be kept in a temp, humidity and pressure controlled room
What do Light microscopes allow us to see?
- The cellular structure of living organisms and some sub cellular structures
- allow observations of living cells and staining of cells to show different features
What do electron microscopes allow us to see?
- Examination of cells in great detail
- But can on,y be used for dead specimens in a vacuum
What can electron microscopes help us determine?
What goes on within individual body cells
