B6.2 - Antibiotics And Painkillers (Finished) Flashcards
What do painkillers and other medicines do?
Treat the symptoms of the disease but do not kill the pathogen causing it.
Antibiotics only work on ___ diseases
Bacterial
Why can’t antibiotics destroy viruses?
Because viruses reproduce inside the cells so it’s difficult to kill the virus without damaging body cells
What are painkillers?
Painkillers are drugs that relieve pain
What is the problem of painkillers?
Painkillers don’t actually tackle the cause of the disease or kill pathogens, just reduce symptoms
What are antibiotics?
Antibiotics are drugs that kill (or prevent growth of) the BACTERIA causing the problem without killing your own body cells
Why can antibiotics not destroy viruses?
Voruses reproduce using your body cells so it is very difficult to develop drugs that just kill the virus but not the body cells
How is the rate of development of resistant strains of bacteria reduced?
Doctors must not over-prescribe antibiotics to reduce the rate of resistant strains if bacteria from developing
Why is bacteria mutating a problem for antibiotics?
Bacteria can mutate which can sometimes cause them to become resistant to an antibiotic. If you have an infection some bacteria may be resistant to it, the non-resistant are killed off but resistant stay reproduce so the population of resistant ones increases
