B4.6 - Tissues And Organs In Plants (Finished) Flashcards
What does epidermal tissue do?
Epidermal tissues cover plant surfaces to protect them. They give of a wacky substance to waterproof the leaf
What does palisade mesophyll tissue do?
It contains lots of chloroplasts to carry out photosynthesis
What is spongy mesophyll tissue like and why?
It has some chloroplasts but also big air spaces and a large surface area for easy diffusion of gases
What do Xylem tissues do?
Xylem carry water and dissolved mineral ions up from the roots to the leaves
What do phloem transport and where?
The phloem carries dissolved food from the leaves arrond the plant
What is meristem tissue for in plants? Where is it found?
It is found at the growing tips of leaves and shoots. It is made up of rapidly dividing plant cells that differentiate into all other cell types needed
What are the two transport tissues in plants?
Xylem and Phloem
What are plant tissues?
Lots of specialised cells working together to perform a specific function
Name three plant tissues
- Xylem
- Phloem
- Palisade mesophyll
- Spongy mesophyll
- Epidermal tissue
- Meristem tissue
What are the leaves, stems and roots all examples of?
Plant organs
What are plant organs?
Collections of specialised tissues working together to perform a function
What size are plant cells about?
100 μm
What is the organ system of a plant and what does it do?
The whole body of a plant forms and organ system for the transport of substances around the plant
What is the name of a couple of phloem and xylem tissue joined together?
A vascular bundle
What does the waxy cuticle do?
Help reduce water loss by evaporation
