B8.4 - Making Te Most Of Photosynthesis (Finished) Flashcards
What are greenhouses used for?
Greenhouses are used to artificially create the ideal environment for plants to grow
How is temperature prevented from becoming the limiting factor for photosynthesis by a greenhouse?
Greenhouses help trap the Sun’s heat to make sure that the temperature does not become the limiting factor. In the winter a gardener may use a heater to keep temperatures at an ideal level and in summer shades and ventilation to cool it down
How do commercial farmers avoid light from becoming the limiting factor for photosynthesis?
Commercila farmers often supply artificial light after the sun goes down in a greenhouse to give plants more photosynthesis time
Why are paraffin heaters sometimes used by farmers in greenhouses?
When paraffin burns it makes carbon dioxide as a by-product increasing the levels of carbon dioxide
Appart from regulating light, temperature and carbon dioxide levels what else can greenhouse owners do to improve plant productiveness?
Keeping plants in a greenhouse keeps them away from pests and disease. Fertilisers can also be added to soil to provide minerals needed for healthy growth
What is the benefit of a greenhouse?
Greenhouses with just right conditions for photosynthesis will allow plants to grow much faster and a decent crop can be harvested more often making more profit
How can the drawback of cost of a greenhouse be improved?
A farmer should supply just the right amount of heat, light, etc to make the plants grow well but not more than they need to reduce wasting money
How are graphs showing more than one limiting factor of photosynthesis used by greenhouse owners?
These types of graph can show how the rate of photosynthesis varies with only one factor changing so an optimum improvement can be found
