How can measles spread?
Measles spread by droplets from an infected person’s sneeze or cough
What are the symptoms of measles
The main symptoms of measles are a red skin rash and signs of a fever
What can measles cause?
Measles causes blindness and brain damage. Also if complications arise it can be fatal, leading to pneumonia etc
What are measles, HIV and Tobacco Mosaic virus all examples of?
Viral diseases
Why is measles declined?
As most people are vaccinated against measles when they are young
How is HIV spread?
HIV is spread by sexual contact or exchanging body fluids (e.g. blood)
What are the symptoms of HIV?
HIV initially causes flu-like symptoms for a few weeks but then no symptoms for several years
What dies HIV do and what does this lead to?
The virus attacks immune cells then remains hidden in the immune system until it is so badly damaged it can’t cope with other infections or cancers. This is AIDS
How can HIV be controlled?
Using antiretroviral drugs the development of AIDS can be prevented for many years
What is TMV?
Tobacco mosaic virus is a virus that affects many species of plants
What does TMV do to crops?
TMV causes distinct mosaic patterns of discolorisation on leaves as the virus destroys cells. This reduces plants growth as the affected areas of the leaf don’t photosynthesise
How is TMV controlled?
Many farmers now grow TMV resistant strains of crops and it was isolated
