B7.1 - Non-communicable Diseases (Finishedish) Flashcards
What is a non-communicable disease?
A non-communicable disease is a disease that can’t be passed from one person to another
What are risk factors?
Risk factors are things linked to the likelihood that a person will develop a certain disease during their lifetime
What are non-communicable diseases caused by?
Several risk factors interacting (things that will increase the likelihood a person develops a disease)
What are the two main sources of risk factors for disease?
Risk factors are often aspects of a person’s lifestyle or the presence of certain substances in the environment/body
What are some risk factors for disease?
Smoking, obesity, too much alcohol, exposure to radiation/substances (carcinogens)
Correlation ___ always equal cause
Does not
Why do some risk factors collerating to disease not cause the disease?
Some risk factors aren’t capable of directly causing diseases. For example high lack of exercise is linked to increase chance of cardiovascular disease but not causing it directly. It is the resulting high blood pressure that causes it.
What is a causal mechanism?
A causal mechanism explains how a factor influences another through a biological process, proving a link between a risk factor and disease
Why do causal mechanisms need to be found to identify risk factors?
Correlation does not equal cause but causal mechanisms demonstrate a link between factor and disease
What is the financial cost of non-communicable diseases?
Researching and treating NCDs is really costly. Families may have to move or adapt homes which is costly and a person with a disease may not be able to work, too many and the economy is affected
