Which type of tumour is cancerous?
Malignant is cancerous, not Benign
What is a benign tumour?
A benign tumour is a tumour that grows till no more room is available. It stays in one place, not being dangerous or cancerous
What is a malignant tumour?
A malignant tumour is where the tumour grows and spreads to neighbouring healthy tissues.
How does a malignant tumour spread?
Cells of a malignant tumour break off and travel in the bloodstream. They invade healthy tissues and form secondary tumours.
What are the risk factors that cause cancer?
Smoking, obesity, Uv exposure, viral infection
Why can smoking cause cancer?
Chemicals found in garretes can cause mutations leading to uncontrolled cell division
What is cancer caused by?
Cancer is caused by mutations which result in uncontrolled rapid cell division that forms tumours
Why are genetics a risk factor for cancer?
Sometimes faulty genes can be inherited that make people more susceptible to cnacer
How does radiotherapy work?
Cancer cells are destroyed by targeted doses of radiation by stoping mitosis in them
How does chemotherapy work?
Chemicals are used to stop cancer cells from dividing, or make them ‘self-destruct’
