B1.2 - Animal And Plant Cells (Finished) Flashcards
What does the nucleus do? (2 things)
- Controls the activities of the cell
- Contains genes carrying instructions for the proteins needed to build new cells or organisms
What is the cytoplasm?
It is the liquid in the cell where the contents of a cell are suspended and where most of the chemical reactions needed for life take place
What does the cell membrane do?
It controls the movement of substances in an out of the cell
What are the mitochondria for?
They are tiny structures in cells where aerobatic respiration takes place, releasing energy for the cell
What do ribosomes do?
They are where protein synthesis takes place, making all the proteins needed for the cell
What does a typical animal cell have?
- Nucleus
- Cell membrane
- Cytoplasm
- Mitochondria
- Ribosomes
What is the length of an average animal cell?
10 - 30 μm
What is the length of an average plant cell?
10 - 100 μm
What is a cell wall made of?
Cellulose
What do chloroplasts do?
They contain chlorophyll which absorbs light so the plant can make food by photosynthesis
Gibe two examples of things the cell membrane would regulate?
2 of:
- Glucose into cell
- mineral ions into cell
- urea out if cell
- hormones out of cell
What is a plant cell wall for?
It strengthens the cell and gives it support by providing structure
What are three extra features you may expect to find in plant cells but not animal cells?
- Chloroplasts
- Vacuole
- Cell wall
What are vacuoles for?
Plants use vacuoles to store things such as hydrocarbon molecules to break down for food or broken parts of the cell. It also keeps the cell rigid to support the plant
What does a cell wall do?
Strengthens cells and supports the plant
