B8.1 - Photosynthesis (Finished) Flashcards
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water -light> glucose + oxygen
What is the symbol equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O -light> C6H12O6 + 6O2
What is the chemical equation for glucose?
C6H12O6
What is photosynthesis?
A process using energy to change carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen
What type of reaction is photosynthesis? (Endo/exo)
Endothermic
Where does photosynthesis take place?
In chloroplasts
What do chloroplasts have that allows for photosynthesis?
Chloroplasts contain pigments like chlorophyll allowing that absorb light. Energy is transferred from the environment to chloroplasts by light to carry out photosynthesis
How is glucose produced in photosynthesis used at first?
Some of it is immediately used by the cells of the plant for respiration but a lot is converted to insoluble starch and stored
What are some adaptions of leaves for photosynthesis?
- Leaves are broad giving a large surface area for light to fall on
- Leaves are thin so diffusion distances are short
- Leaves have veins bringing plenty of water in xylem to cells and removing products through phloem
- They have air spaces allowing allowing carbon dioxide to get to cells and oxygen to leave
- They have guard cells that open and close stomata to regulate gas exchange
- contain chloroplasts
How do thin leaves help with photosynthesis?
Thin leaves allow for short diffusion distances for gases
