B5.8 - Diseases Caused By Fungi And Protists (Finished) Flashcards
What is rose black spot?
A fungus that causes purple or black spots to develop on the leaves of rose plants
What is malaria?
Malaria is a disease caused by a protist
Why does rose black spot affect plants?
It causes leaves to turn yellow and drop off meaning less photosynthesis can happen so the plant doesn’t grow very well.
How does rose black spot spread?
Rose black spot spreads through the environment in water or by wind
How can the spread of rose black spots be prevented?
Using fungicides and by stripping the plant of it’s affected leaves (and destroying those leaves)
Diseases caused by protists usually involve ___
A vector that transfers the protist to the host
What does it mean for malaria to be a protist pathogen?
It feeds on other organisms
How does malaria spread?
Part of the malaria protists life cycle is in the mosquito where it reproduces sexually and other part in the human body where it reproduces asexually. The mosquitos are vectors that pass the disease onto people when feeding in their blood
What does malaria cause?
It travels around the circulatory system affecting the liver and damaging red blood cells, causes repeated episodes of fever and can be fatal
How can the spread if malaria be prevented?
By stopping the mosquitos from breeding and using insecticides and mosquito nets, taking antimalarial drugs to kill the parasites
