Bradshaw Flashcards
What was the aim of Bradshaw?
To do a case study to see if CBT can be used to treat Schizophrenia
What was the sample in Bradshaw?
One 26 year old woman with Schizophrenia called Carol
How long was the case study?
3 years
What did the first stage involve?
Building a rapport with the therapist
What did the second stage involve?
Understanding how CBT would work for her
What did the third stage involve?
Undergoing CBT, the final 3 months involved no sessions
What was involved in the CBT?
Managing stress, challenging her thoughts, increasing activities, practicing this in the real world
What measurements were used in Bradshaw?
Role functioning scale, number of hospitalisations, Goal attainment scale and Global pathology index
When did Carol complete the tests
Before theapy, each year, 6 months after and 1 year after
What did we find about her Psychosocial functioning?
It improved from 6 to 27 at the end and this continued for a full year
What were the results of her Symptamology?
It went down from 7 to 1 at the end and this continued for a full year
What were the results about hospitalisation?
Her hospitalisations went from 60 to 0 which continued for up to a year after
What were the results from her Goal attainment scale?
It went from 19.85 to 80.15 which continued for a full year
What is an issue with the sample?
Small and unique case so not generalisable to a wider population
What is a strength of this being longitudinal?
We can see development and change in her Schizophrenia over time
What is good about case studies like that of Carol?
Lots of depth and detail about her Schizophrenia and progression
Is Bradshaw’s study reliable?
Yes because there are various standardised measurements however case studies on unique cases over a long time are difficult to repeat
What is good about using things like GPI, RFS etc?
Triangulation so you get concurrent validity and they’re accreditted tests therefore they are valid
What are issues with doing a case study over 3 years?
There are lots of extraneous variables which can influence her Schizophrenia
