what is vagal indigestion?
diseases affecting vagal innervation of forestomach and abomasum
what is type I vagal indigestion?
failure of eructation/free gas bloat
pharyngeal trauma, chronic pneumonia
what are the classic clinical signs of vagal indigestion?
rumen distention- papple
poor appetite
+/- bradycardia
rumen hypermotile or weak to static
poor body condition
rectal: enlarged rumen, undigested fiber in manure
what are the three types of acute bloat?
frothy bloat
free gas
gas and fluid
how can you confirm frothy bloat?
tube passed does not relieve bloat
no pings
what can you give cows before going out to graze to prevent frothy bloat?
antifoaming materials: poloxalene with grain, in molasses lick or poloxalene block
what are the etiologies of free gas bloat?
choke
extra-esophageal masses
grain overload and excess VFA production
hypocalcemia with resulting ileus
localized peritonitis with ileus
vagal indigestion
tetanus
listeriosis
how can you treat free gas bloat?

treat underlying cause if necessary
who can present with fluid and gas bloat?
calves with abomasitis
