What is the disease cycle?
Bacteria goes into gut of Flea- goes on back of rat-gut explodes killing rat-disease still there and transfers to humans
What are some symptoms of the Plague?
Feel ill, high fever,cramps,nose bleeding,large infection in neck, armpits,groin,lypheniles start to swell
What occurs in the nemonic phase
Coughing, sneezing, which leads to spreading
What occurs in the systosonic phase
Disease gets in blood and skin turns black and begins to decay
Origins of Black Plague?
Black Sea Region. Constantinople- Port Cities of Italy- Carts on Trade Routes to other parts of Europe
What areas affected?
Pyrenees Mountains, Alps, Parts of Belgium , and much of Europe
What did people believe was the source of the plague?
Poisonous fumes released by earthquakes
What were some popular remedies?
Amulets, moderate lifestyle, giving in to passions, leaching, self flagellation
What is self flagellation?
Radical church members would beat themselves with shards and whips hoping for divine intervention, eventually outlawed by church because they’re bodies helped spread the disease
Explain what anti-semitism is and why it’s important to the Black plague
Extreme discrimination of Jews and people used them as scapegoats for the disease mostly because they were money lenders, a lot of Jews were burned at the stake or drowned
What is the best remedy for the Black Plague at this time period?
Flight and seclusion, leave towns with black death
What were some cultural influences that occurred because of their black plague

How many died?
25 million, 1/3 of Europe’s population
Why did Agriculture decline after the plague
Less workers, less demand for food, wool production happened more often
What social group lost more then anyone else?
Nobleman and holders, had more to lose

Limited wages and prevented workers from leaving their homes or workplace in hopes of better conditions

What is the Taille?
Huge land tax that all common people had to.pay based upon how much land they owned
Who are the containers of monarchy? And were they hurt by the Black Plague or grew stronger?
Nobles and Clergy, they were weakened by the Black death
Why was urbanization affected after the Black Plague?
Many people’s masters died and were forced to move into citys, increase in demand for artisans (guild)
