Drug Names
Atenolol

Indications
HTN, angina pectoris, tachyarrhythmias, migraine HA, MI, glaucoma, heart failure, and hyperthyroidism
Mechanism of Action
Blocks vasoconstriction, decrease heart rate, decreased cardiac muscle contraction, and tend to increase blood flow to the kidneys, leading to decrease in the release of renin
Contraindications
Heart failure, bradycardia, heart block
Adverse Effects
CNS: HA, fatigue, dizziness
CV: bradycardia, hypotension
Pulmonary: bronchospasm, laryngospasm
GU: decreased libido and impotence
Drug-Drug Interactions
May antagonize the therapeutic effects of bronchodilators
May alter the requirements of insulin/hypoglycemic agents in patients with diabetes
Assessment
HX: allergy, pregnancy/lactation, impaired kidney function, heart failure, bradycardia, heart block, diabetes, lung disease
Physical: Baseline; CNS, heart and lung sounds, abdomen, perfusion, vitals, ECG
Labs: electrolytes, renal and hepatic function
