b,coli Flashcards
Largest protozoan parasite affecting man
BALANTIDIUM COLI
Ciliated organism
BALANTIDIUM COLI
Common in ciliate but rare in protozoan parasite
BALANTIDIUM COLi
It has a unique osmoregulatory capacity
○ There is a difference between the osmotic pressure
of hemolymph and and the external medium in a
given salinity
BALANTIDIUM COLI
It is capable of attacking the intestinal epithelium
BALANTIDIUM COLI
Ulceration- dysentery
BALANTIDIUM COLI
TROPHOZOITE
● Unstained: grayish-green
● With cytostome which is responsible for the acquisition of food
BALANTIDIUM COLI
● Associated with pigs
BALANTIDIUM COLI
responsible for the excretion of wastes
Cytophage- b.coli
Macronucleus that is winged shape and micronucleus
B.coli
B.coli movement
rotary
B.coli reproduction
Transverse binary fission
B.coli: Opening at the pointed anterior end
which leads to the cytostome or cell mouth
Peristome
Macronucleus is long and kidney-shaped
b.coli
Spherical micronucleus is nestled next to it (although in this
illustration, it is not that clearly seen)
B.coli
is the infective stage of B. coli
cyst
The cyst are round and have a tough heavy cyst
wall made of 1 or 2 layers usually only the
macronucleus and perhaps __ and ___are visible in the cyst
the cilia and the
contractile vacuoles
s the only pathogenic ciliate and is the largest
protozoan
Balantidium coli
are the stage responsible for transmission of
balantidiasis
Cysts
MOT b.coli
ingestion of cyst
PATHOGENESIS:
Tissue invasion
Ulcer: rounded base and wide neck
Ulceration is due to hyaluronidase
Trophozoites: usually seen in the exudates or the base of
ulcers
Asymptomatic
B.coli
Amebic Dysentery Causative agent
Entamoeba histolytica
Balantidial dysentery Causative agent
Balantidium Coli
Balantidial dysentery Disease
Balantidiasis
Amebic Dysentery vDisease
Amoebiasis
BALANTIDIAL DYSENTERY
Acute:
: 6-15 episodes of diarrhea/day
an infective disease of the large bowels which is
characterized by frequent passing of blood in mucus which
stood along with several abdominal cramps.
Dysentery:
BALANTIDIAL DYSENTERY diarrhea alternating with constipation
Chronic:
diagnosis of dysentery
DFS or concentration techniques
o Trophozoites and cysts stages are seen
Rectal biopsy
Culture method (Barnet and Yarbrough’s medium, Balamuth’s
medium)
