AUC 207 SUBWAY & RAILROAD OPERATIONS Flashcards
If members are required to operate under a subway car request transit personnel to
Protect the contact rail shoes of the affected cars with wooden slippers
FD personnel will never be permitted to operate on track areas unless assured power is off, with the exception of an
Imminent life hazard where immediate action is required to save life
Auxiliary contact with the Desk Superintendent can also be established through
Any Transit Authority police officer or other employee equipped with a Transit Authority radio, or by telephones located both at the Railroads Clerks booths and at areas designated by a blue light
Whenever power is removed in the subway what will still be operating
Right of way lights
Station lights and signals
Drainage and ventilation equipment
Train headlights
Interior subway car lights found to be either on or off shall be
No indication that power has been removed
When conditions do not require power removal reconnaissance may be conducted by an
Officer and a firefighter operating as a team and only from platforms or catwalks. Tracks shall not be entered or crossed
Fire in the track area may or may not
Require power to be turned off, depending on the severity of the fire and smoke conditions. If a determination is made to leave the power on wait until a train comes into the station and notify the train operator that you are walking out on the bench wall to extinguish the fire.
When FD operations have been terminated and all FD personnel are cleared from the tracks the ONLY proper terminology to notify the dispatcher is
Fire Department operations are completed and the Fire Department no longer requires power to be turned off
As a last resort if you have to evacuate the train you can
Walk passengers out of the tunnel using either the roadbed or bench wall
If at all possible if you need to evacuate a train the people should be evacuated to a station
Through the train
One of the best ways to reduce panic is by
Increased lighting
Upon reaching the train make contact with the
Train operator or conductor and see if the intercom system works. If it does have that person make an announcement that the FD is on scene and that the situation will shortly be under control. If the intercom system does not work, several members walking either on bench walls or alongside the train can go as far as the last car notifying people of our presence
What are the tactics relating to a petroleum product leakage into the subway system
- Eliminate sources of ignition
- Determine vapor concentration (Explosimeter)
- Controlled ventilation to localize & dissipate inflammable vapors
- Seek out depression areas where heavier than air vapors may accumulate
- Utilize available foam resources
- Enlist the cooperation of the NYSPC
- Prevent liquid from entering track drainage system. Provide a dam to contain and cover the pool until removed. Ascertain from TA location of drainage system and sump pumps and route flow
- If underground storage tank involved notify BFP
- Use emergency exit openings to vent
When a fuel spill is close to a grating or main entrance of a subway station we must try to stop the flow into these entrances by
Diking. Preferably by SAND OR EARTH, if not use planking. If none of these things are available, charge several lengths of hose and encircle the fuel spill. This should be followed by a layer of foam.
A 32 inch reflective prism shaped sign with WHITE lettering on a RED background with a NUMBER recorded on it indicates a
Subway Emergency Exit
A 5 light cluster in a tunnel indicates the location
Of an emergency exit, but it is being phased out
If the Platform Track Identification sign located at the end of each platform list the identification of the next train station then
There are no Emergency Exits between the 2 stations
A green globe on a post light at a subway street entrance indicates there
May or may not be a token booth clerk at this location and the stairway is open 24 hours. In areas not serviced by a token booth clerk access will be via a HEET. High entrance/exit turnstile or gate
A six foot high red and white reflective indicator pole has been installed at
Each emergency exit location at street level on Atlantic avenue for the LIRR lines. Indicator poles are attached to one of the bollards at each location
A red globe on a post light at a subway street entrance indicates there
May or may not be a token booth clerk at this location and the stairway will be closed at some point during a 24 hour period
NEAR the blue light is a
Power removal box
Telephone
Fire extinguisher Dry Chemical
When using the phone at the power removal box when speaking you MUST
Keep the button depressed at all times during the conservation. If you release the button the call will TERMINATE
If a member encounters an “out of service” bag covering a power removal box the member should
Use the associated telephone to contact the Rail Control Center to request removal of power
What should you do with the Emergency Exit Book that is given to all units
Highlight and tab the pages of the Emergency Exit book that contain exits in their FIRST ALARM RESPONSE AREA
Each unit shall prepare an exact list of emergency exit locations within their
1st ALARM RESPONSE district. This list shall be securely fastened to the subway emergency exit booklets issued to all units. Also highlight and tab the pages in the emergency exit booklet where these locations are found
Dry chemical extinguishers are located at
Power removal boxes
Approximately 600 feet apart
All under river tubes of the NYC Transit are equipped with
Wet standpipe systems
All these tubes have Siamese connections at each end of the tube
Water supplies for wet standpipe systems are
City main connected at each end and are protected from freezing
Gate valves on the standpipe system with FD threads are located at
Approximately 200 feet intervals
The standpipes in these tunnels are equipped with
1 1/2 hose with adjustable fog and straight stream nozzles
The HEET is opened with a
1620 key
The TA has installed new Emergency Exit signs to replace the older Emergency Exit signs. What are the new signs
32 inch prism shaped reflective sign with an emergency exit NUMBER.
(This replaces the 5 light cluster sign)
TA padlock
- TA replacing locks with new ones that need special key
- This key can not be duplicated
- Each key has a serial # and is assigned to a specific TA worker
- FD units will not be issued keys
- Key may be obtained from token booth clerk
- Standard FE if necessary
New TA track ID signs being installed contain this info
You are here indicator Direction to nearest emergency exit Distance to nearest emergency exit The ID of the nearest emergency exit The normal train movement at that location
