Schematic that will show the section of the guideway that has be de-energized
There are Blue Light Power removal boxes along the guideway every
800 feet
Walkways can be
Either between the tracks or on the sides
Side walkways will be provided with a

In an emergency side exit doors can be opened from

- Must activate door release handle
- Handle located alongside the door on interior and exterior of car
If a train is stopped outside a station and the Emergency Door Release Handle is pulled, the door will not open unless
The Release Handle pulled is on the side of the train where a walkway is located
All AirTrain cars are equipped with
- Smoke detectors
- Fire extinguishers
- Intercoms
The AirTrain system trans verses a tunnel on the grounds of JFK that is
1500 feet long. This tunnel goes underneath the taxiways of the airport. The AirTrain tunnel is adjacent to another tunnel that is used as a service road for JFK vehicles. A dividing wall separates both of these tunnels. This second tunnel is known as the restricted service road (RSR)
Both tunnels are equipped with
Standpipe outlets
The AirTrain tunnel has
- One emergency exit
- Located midway in the tunnel
- It exits through a bulkhead at street level
FD operations in both tunnels may require
HT relay UNTIL a repeater system is installed
AirTrain 3rd Rail Power
- 750 volts
- Location of 3rd rail varies frequently
- Fiberglass cover
- Presence of guardrail above parapet wall USUALLY indicates 3rd rail located between tracks and side walkway is present
Members accessing the guideway from a TL, AL or from any other location MUST
First ascertain the location of the 3rd rail prior to proceeding onto the guideway
Blue Light Station Power Removal Boxes
- Located every 800 feet along the guideway
- Depress red power removal button
- Certain sections of guideway power is removed
- Schematic inside box shows power removal location
- Must verify which sections of guideway have been de-energized
