Antipsychotic Drugs Flashcards
What class of antipsychotic drug could be classified as a neuroleptic drug? Why?
The Typical Antipsychotics because they produce movement disorders as side effects.
What two conditions can be formed due to dysfunction in dopamine transmission?
Psychosis
Parkinson’s Disease
A patient is having paranoia, hallucinations, disordered speech, and delusions. What condition may this person have? Are these positive or negative symptoms? What type of antipsychotic would this person use?
Schizophrenia
Positive symptoms
Since it is only positive symptoms, a First generation or “Typical” Antipsychotic would be best.
* Chlorpromazine * Fluphenazine * Thioridazine * Haloperidol (Haldol) * Thiothixene
Other than working on D2 receptors, what other receptors do “Typical” antipsychotics block?
They also block alpha receptors, cholinoreceptors, and histamine receptors.
A person has schizophrenia and experiencing both positive and negative symptoms. What category of drug would you give this patient as treatment?
Second Generation Antipsychotic
AKA “Atypical Antipsychotic”
* Aripiprazole (Abilify) * Clozapine * Lurasidone (Latuda) * Olanzapine * Quetiapine (Seroquel) * Risperidone * Ziprasidone
What has a higher risk of side effects? First or Second generation antipsychotic?
Second generation because they bind to more types of receptors.
What category of antipsychotic produces a movement disorder?
First generation antipsychotic
(Typical Antipsychotic)
What are some side effects of taking Second generation antipsychotics?
Diabetes
Hypercholesteremia
Weight gain
Other than schizophrenia, what can Atypical antipsychotic drugs also be used for?
Can be used as an adjunct treatment of depression or treatment of bipolar disorder.
What are some other effects of using antipsychotic drugs?
Movement disorders (most common with typical antipsychotics.
Antiemetic effects (inhibit nausea and vomiting)
Effect on noradrenergic neurotransmission (cause orthostatic hypotension, reflex tachycardia, and arrythmias).
A cancer patient is experiencing a difficult time and has been reporting severe nausea and vomiting. What kind of drug would you give and why?
Antipsychotic drug
It has an alternative effect of blocking the chemoreceptor trigger zone which would inhibit nausea and vomiting.
What side effects on the cholinergic receptors do antipsychotics have?
Blurry vision
Dry mouth
Do antipsychotic drugs have a high potential for abuse?
No, they do not exhibit signs of dependence or tolerance
A person that is experiencing a manic phase, what would you prescribe them?
Lithium
Does lithium have a big or small therapeutic range?
Small therapeutic range so must be careful when prescribing
