Antimicrobials: Nucleic Acid Synthesis Inhibitors Flashcards
Folic acid synthesis inhibitors
Sulfonamides, Dihydrofolate reductase inhibitors
Direct acting nucleic acid inhibitors
Quinolones, Nitrofurantoin, Rifamycins
Sulfonamides
Broad spectrum, bacteriostatic
Rapidly absorbed orally
Have high albumin binding–can cause kernicterus in neonates
Adverse effects of sulfonamides
hypersensitivity, photosensitivity, acute hemolysis
Combination of sulfonamide and DHF reductase inhibitor
Synergy and decreased resistance
Trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole
Pyrimethamine + Sulfadiazine: DOC for toxoplasmosis
Quinolones
All have “flox” in name
Bactericidal
Distributed to all tissues and bones
Adverse effects of quinolones
Tendonitis, tendon rupture, increased QT
Quinolones contraindicated in
Children and pregnancy
Quinolones uses:
UTI/gastroenteritis, osteomyelitis, skin infection
