Phenytoin
Used to treat any seizure except absence
Blocks voltage gated sodium channels by keeping them in inactivated state
Similar to 1B antiarrhythmic drugs
Zero order elimination
Adverse effects unique to phenytoin
Gingival hyperplasia and hirsutism
Carbamazepine
Similar therapeutic uses to phenytoin
DOC for trigeminal neuralgia
Used for bipolar manic phase
Adverse effect unique to carbamazepine
SIADH
Black box warning for carbamazepine
Rashes including steven johnson and aplastic anemia
Valproic Acid
Used for all types of seizures including absence
Inhibits GABA transaminase to increase GABA
Inhibits T type Ca channels and voltage gated Na channels
Unique SE of Valproic acid
alopecia, pancreatitis, hepatotoxicity, thrombocytopenia
Ethosuximide
only used for absence seizures
T type Ca channel blocker
