Medal of Valor
Awarded to members or partnering law enforcement officials (requires approval from
the agency’s chain of command) who demonstrated exceptional courage during an
extremely dangerous situation.
Medal of Merit
Awarded to members or partnering law enforcement officials (requires approval from
the agency’s chain of command) who suffered serious injury while performing their
official duties. Documentation that corroborates the severity of the injury is required for
the consideration of this award. The act performed by partnering law enforcement
officials must have occurred in Duval County or while assisting a member of JSO.
Purple Heart
Awarded to members (through the rank of lieutenant or civilian equivalence) by the
three Peer Achievement Boards for exceptional achievements within their designated
classification that rise well above the normal duties, responsibilities, and expectations
for that position. This award is presented at the division level.
Peer Achievement Award
Awarded to members or partnering law enforcement officials (requires approval from
the agency’s chain of command) whose exceptional actions in a life-threatening
situation directly results in the saving of a human life. Documentation that corroborates
the lifesaving action, such as witness statements or medical opinions, is required for the
consideration of this award. The act performed by partnering law enforcement officials
must have occurred in Duval County or while assisting a member of JSO. This level of
Lifesaving Medal is presented at the Meritorious Awards Ceremony.
Lifesaving Medal
Posthumously awarded to a police service animal that loses its life in the performance of
duty. This award is presented to the animal’s handler.
Canine/Equestrian Medal of Distinction
Awarded to a police service animal that sustained a serious injury while performing
official duties.
Canine/Equestrian Courage Award
Meritorious Awards Review Board Member Composition:
a. Director of Personnel & Professional Standards (Chairperson);
b. Chief of Professional Standards (Vice Chairperson);
c. All division chiefs; and
d. Public Relations Executive (non-voting consultant/Awards Coordinator).
