Assistant Chief of Violence Reduction
A Violent Crime Unit detective shall be requested to respond to the scene 24 hours a day for the
following incidents:
- Aggravated batteries resulting from the discharge of a firearm;
- Aggravated assaults with a firearm discharge and a suspect is in custody;
- Aggravated assault involving a police officer with a discharge of a firearm by suspect only.
If a police officer is shot or discharges a firearm at a suspect, the Homicide/Cold Case Unit
shall be called out to investigate;
- Aggravated assault involving a police officer with a discharge of a firearm by suspect only.
- Shootings into occupied dwellings or conveyances and a suspect is in custody;
- Accidental discharge of a firearm with a person shot by another person. Violent Crime Unit
detectives shall not respond to incidents where an individual has an accidental self-inflicted
gunshot wound; - Incidents involving the discharge of a firearm, that appear to be gang-related, or cases that
are part of a pattern, series, or trend; and - Any other incident as directed by the Supervisor of Violent Crime Unit or Commanding
Officer of Violent Crime Unit.
All callouts require a patrol supervisor to be at the scene prior to
contacting the Supervisor of Homicide Unit through the Police Emergency Communications
Officer (PECO):
All unnatural deaths (any type of accidental death, suicide, sudden infant death, or any
death when the cause is undetermined);
The Cold Case Unit shall be called when any member, acting in his official capacity:
a. Intentionally discharges a firearm at a person;
b. Unintentionally discharges a firearm that results in a person being shot;
c. Takes any action against another person that results in the death or life-threatening
injury of that person;
d. Is involved in any in-custody death; or
e. Is killed, shot, or the victim of a life-threatening injury inflicted by criminal means
(applies to JSO canines as well).
Human remains shall not be transported in any JSO vehicle without the express
approval of ________ or higher authority.

An Incident Report is not required for cases in which the deceased person is in the Hospice
Program, and that person has not been declared indigent.

a. Persons under the care of Hospice Program who have been declared terminally ill; and
b. Prior to death, a doctor has agreed to sign a death certificate.

considered age 11 or under) or a confirmed non-custodial abduction, the Supervisor of

reported offenses of the same incident and the victim is still missing at the time of the
report, a separate report (with a separate CCR number) shall be written for the

suspected abduction of a child. The decision to utilize FEMCA rests with the

In cases of child abduction, an America’s Missing Broadcast Emergency Response
(AMBER) alert may be issued under the following circumstances:
(1) Law enforcement confirms a child has been abducted; or
(2) Law enforcement believes the circumstances surrounding the abduction indicate
the child is in danger of serious bodily harm or death.
