Today, everyone was crowding around him like he was a hero or something.
*crowd : 사람들, 가득 메우다, 밀려오다
*crowd around somebody : (~ 주위로) 모여들다
I tried to cash in on some of Rowley’s new popularity, but it totally backfired.
*cash in on something : ~을 이용해 먹다, ~으로 (돈을) 벌다, ~에 편승하다
*backfire : 역효과를 낳다, 폭발음을 내다
At lunch a bunch of girls invited Rowley over to their table so they could feed him.
*invite over to : ~로 오라고 청하다.
What really ticks me off about that is that Rowley is right-handed, and it’s his left hand that’s broken.
*tick somebody off : ~를 화나게 하다, (특히 아이를) 꾸짖다
I realized Rowley’s injury thing is a pretty good racket, so I decided it was time for me to have an injury of my own.

It’s a raging infection caused by a splinter that was left untreated.

I couldn’t figure out why the girls weren’t swarming me like they swarmed Rowley, but then I realized what the problem was.
*figure out : 계산해 내다, 생각해 내다, 이해하다.
*swarm : 떼, 떼를 지어 다니다, 떼를 지어 날아다니다 Tourists were swarming all over the island. 관광객들이 그 섬 전역을 떼 지어 몰려다녔다.
So I came up with a solution that I thought was just as good.
*come up with : ~을 생산하다, 제시[제안]하다. ~을 찾아내다
That idea was a total bust, too. My bandage did end up attracting attention from a couple of people, but believe me, they were not the type of people I was going for.
Can I peek at your infection?
*bust : 부수다, 고장 내다, 흉상, 고장난
*end up ~ing : 결국~하게 되다
*attract : 마음을 끌다, 끌어들이다, 불러일으키다
*I was going for 내가 원하다, 내가 추구하다

One of the classes I signed up for is something called Independent Study.
*sign up for : ~을 신청(가입)하다, (강좌)에 등록하다
But being good at sewing does not exactly buy you popularity points at school.
*be good at : ~에 능숙하다
*buy you popularity points : 인기 점수를 얻다, 인기를 얻다
