You can only use El/La(s)/Lo(s) mismo/a(s):
When we have ‘the same’ followed by a noun (not ‘thing’), matching that noun in gender
and number.
Siempre me hace las mismas preguntas.
Tengo los mismos libros de siempre.
Él es el mismo hombre que robó el banco. Son las mismas fotografías.
At the beginning of a sentence meaning perhaps (a lo mejor) followed by indicative. Igual llegan a tiempo.

(As opposed to: Sebastián es lo mismo que su padre, which would mean he is the same thing. This sentence wouldn’t work.)
When we compare as x as: (Igual de (adj) que… )
Sebastián es igual de rubio que su padre / Sebastián es tan rubio como su padre.
Meaning equal, identical:
No hay dos gotas de agua que sean iguales.
Lo mismo llegan a tiempo. A lo mejor llegan a tiempo.

You can only use Igual when:
It’s an adjective meaning: the same class or condition, the same nature, the same quality,
looking the same, a copy of…
