Ellos son personas felices. (we say they are ‘personas’ which is a permanent trait, so we use SER)
We are very happy today.
Nosotros estamos muy contentos hoy. (temporary state/notice that when we talk about temporary happiness we tend to use ‘estar contento’ and when we talk about permanent happiness we tend to use ‘ser feliz’)
They are young students.
Ellos son estudiantes jóvenes. (permanent trait)
My friend is tall.
Mi amigo es alto. (the plan/ permanent trait)
Goodness! How tall you are! (tú)
¡Por dios!¡Qué alto estás! (not the plan/surprise)
The sky is black.
El cielo está negro. (not the expected/plan)

Era un coche/carro viejo.(permanent characteristic)
