We use “salir bien” or “salir mal” to say that the result was good or bad. We use it to describe how we did in an exam, as well as other activities such as cooking, for example.
¿Qué tal te salió el examen? (How did the exam go?)
El examen no me salió muy bien. (The exam didn’t go very well.)
La tortilla que hice anoche me salió fatal. (The omelette I made last night went really badly.)
Dialogue
Alicia: ¡Estoy tan cansada hoy!
Alicia: I’m so tired today!
David: ¿Y eso? ¿Saliste el fin de semana y dormiste poco?
David: How come? Did you go out at the weekend and not sleep much?
Alicia: ¡Qué va! Dormí muy poco porque pasé todo el fin de semana en la biblioteca. Tengo un examen mañana y necesitaba repasar mucho.
Alicia: No, no! I slept very little because I spent all weekend at the library. I have an exam tomorrow and I needed to revise a lot.
David: No te preocupes, vas a aprobar.
David: Don’t worry, you’re going to pass.
Alicia: ¡Eso espero! ¿Qué tal tus exámenes?
Alicia: I hope so! How are your exams going?
David: Yo tuve un examen de inglés ayer y me salió bastante bien.
David: I had an English exam and it went well.
Alicia: ¡Qué bien! Yo voy a clases de inglés ahora pero quiero cambiarme de curso.
Alicia: That’s great! I go to English lessons now but I want to change course.
David: ¿No estás contenta con tu curso?
David: You’re not happy with your course?
Alicia: Es que no le entiendo bien al profesor cuando explica.
Alicia: I don’t understand the teacher well when he is explaining something.
