Here’s a tip
The word “tiempo” has various meanings in Spanish. Depending on the context, it can refer to the time or the weather.
Here we’re going to learn a few expressions we use to describe the weather.
¿Qué tiempo hace? (What’s the weather like?)
Hace mucho frío y está lloviendo. (It’s very cold and it’s raining.)
We always use the third person singular to talk about the weather: “nieva” (it snows), “llueve” (it rains), “está nevando” (it’s snowing), “está lloviendo” (it’s raining)…
En invierno nieva a menudo. (It often snows in winter.)
En verano llueve muy poco. (It rains very little in summer.)
Hoy está lloviendo mucho. (It’s raining a lot today.)
We can use phrases like “hacer buen tiempo” (to have good weather) or “hacer mal tiempo” (to have bad weather) to talk about the weather generally.
Hoy hace buen tiempo. (The weather is good today.)
Ayer hizo muy mal tiempo. (The weather was very bad yesterday.)
Dialogue
Laura: ¿Todavía no has hecho la maleta? ¡Nos vamos a Londres esta tarde!
Laura: Haven’t you packed yet? We’re going to London this afternoon!
Enrique: Es que no sé qué ropa llevar. ¿Qué tiempo hace?
Enrique: I don’t know what clothes to take with me. What’s the weather like?
Laura: Normalmente hace mal tiempo. Está nublado y llueve mucho esta época del año.
Laura: The weather is usually bad. It’s cloudy and rains a lot this time of the year.
Enrique: Sí, pero Tomás me dijo que esta semana no está lloviendo. Creo que está haciendo mucho sol.
Enrique: Yes, but Tomás told me that this week it hasn’t been raining. I think it’s been very sunny there.
Laura: Es verdad, hablé con él ayer y dijo que ahora está haciendo calor.
Laura: That’s true, I spoke to him yesterday and he said that it’s hot now.
Enrique: Voy a llevar ropa de verano y un par de jerseys porque por la noche normalmente hace más frío.
Enrique: I’m going to take some summer clothes and a couple of jumpers because it’s usually colder at night.
Laura: Vale, ¡pero date prisa porque nos vamos al aeropuerto después de comer!
Laura: OK, but hurry up because we’re leaving for the airport after lunch!
