what is oligozoospermia?
a clinical condition where there is an abnormally low number of spermatozoa in the semen
what is azoospermia?
no sperm appears in the ejaculate
what is cryptorchid testis?
maldescended testis
which function is impaired in cryptorchid testis? why?
spermatogenesis is impaired because of the elevated temperature (testis function best just below body temperature)
what happens to the cells in cryptorchid testis?
germ cells abscent
Sertoli and Leydig cells secrete male sex hormones
what is Cryptorchid testes associated with?
increased incidence of malignant testicular tumours
what is orchitis?
inflammation of the testis
when does orchitis occur?
in some individuals who suffer mumps after puberty
what does orchitis result in?
impaired spermatogenesis, occasionally leading to seminiferous tubule degeneration or at times, infertility
what can cause absence of germ cells?
congenital or acquired (e.g. drugs, viral, infections, irradiation, cryptorchidism)
how common is testicular tumours?
rare
what do most testicular tumours arise from?
germ cells, with a high degree of malignancy
how do testicular tumours present?
as a swelling / lump in testis
