1.1 development of the reproductive system - abnormal development Flashcards
what is true hermaphroditism?
an individual with mosaicism of XY, XX or XO
what does true hermaphroditism allow for?
both testicular and ovarian tissue to develop
how do the genitals present in true hermaphroditism?
ambiguous (depending on amount of testosterone secreted by testicular tissue)
what is pseudohermaphroditism?
an individual with an XY genotype, yet foetal genitalia is insensitive to testosterone
how will the testis of pseudohermaphroditism present?
undescended in lumbosacral region
how will the internal & external genitalia of pseudohermaphroditism present?
no internal genitalia will be produced, external genitalia is female
what will the undescended testis lead to an increased risk of in pseudohermaphroditism?
increased risk of infertility and developing germ cell tumours
what is congenital adrenal hyperplasia a result of?
excessive secretion of androgens (including testosterone) from the adrenal glands
what will happen to gonads and internal genitalia in an individual with genotype XX in congenital adrenal hyperplasia?
then gonads will be female, yet the internal genitalia will be both female and male
why would the internal genitalia be both female and male in congenital adrenal hyperplasia?
no MIH produced, but there is testosterone, so both Wolffian duct and Mullerian duct growth will occur
what will the external genitalia of congenital adrenal hyperplasia be?
male (from testosterone secretion)
