what is heavy periods known as?
menorrhagia
causes of menorrhagia?
abnormal clotting
pathology: fibroids, IUCD
medical disorders: cancer, progesterone contraception
what are fibroids?
benign growth of the uterine cavity
can mimic pregnancy / tumour
what are the different types of uterine fibroids?
ovary, fallopian tube, uterus, cervix, vagina intracavitary (within womb) submucosal (within mucosa) intramural (within myometrium) subserosal (within serosa) pedunculated
what is dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB)?
no other cause has been found to account for the heavy periods (indeterminate cause)
in 60% of cases
heavy bleeding
no recognisable pelvic pathology, pregnancy / general bleeding disorders
how do you view endometrial cancer?
- hysteroscopic view (gold standard) - endometrium view as bumpy and not smooth (can invade myometrium)
- ultrasound - thickened endometrium
- pelvic MRI
what is endometrial ablation of the endometrium?
burn lining of endometrium with laser - hoping to think it, to reduce the amount patient bleeds every month, sometimes requires repeating of procedure

what is a common cause of irregular bleeding?
hormonal contraceptives (only first 3 months can consider irregular, but beyond that, think about differential diagnosis)
what is an example of irregular bleeding?
bleeding between periods
