2/18- Heart (Exam 2) Flashcards
What are arteries?
Always vessels carrying blood AWAY from the heart
Almost always carry oxygenated blood
Red in diagrams
What are veins?
Always carry blood BACK to the heart
Almost always blood is deoxygenated
Blue in diagrams
What is the superior vena cava?
Draining blood from head and arms to heart
What is the inferior vena cava?
Drains blood from legs (lower body) to the heart
What is the right atrium?
Muscular chamber
Drains blood to right ventricle
What is the right ventricle?
Muscular chamber
Goes to valve and valve shuts off and directs blood to pulmonary trunk
What is a valve?
Swinging doors that open one way
Does the pulmonary trunk split into a left and right pulmonary artery?
Yes
What kind of blood is the pulmonary trunk and arteries carrying?
Deoxygenated blood
What kind of blood is the pulmonary veins carrying?
Oxygenated blood
What is the left atrium?
Muscular chamber
Brings blood to left ventricle
What does the left ventricle do?
Fills with blood and goes to aorta to the body and not back in left atrium
What is a papillary muscle?
Finger like structures in ventricles
What are the chordae tendineae?
Heart strings that are connected to the papillary muscle that keep the valves close
What is the first vessel of the pulmonary circuit?
Pulmonary trunk
