Q

VENTRICULAR FIBRILLATION (V-FIB)

What is ALWAYS the Best INITIAL Treatment for V-Fib?

A

Unsynchronized Cardioversion

Unsynchronized Cardioversion (defibrillation) is administered as follows:

  1. Continue CPR
  2. Reattempt Defibrillation
  3. Epinephrine (IV)
  4. Reattempt Defibrillation
  5. Amiodarone (IV) or Lidocaine (IV)
  6. Reattempt Defibrillation
  7. Repeat several cycles of CPR between each shock

Q

VENTRICULAR FIBRILLATION (V-FIB)

What is the Mechanism of “Need for Synchronization” with V-Fib?

A
  • The T-wave represents the Refractory Period.
  • An electrical shock delivered during the T-wave can set off a worse rhythm (specifically, Asystole and Ventricular Fibrillation).
  • Do NOT deliver a shock during the refractory period (T-wave).
