  1. Involves a decision about how threatening the event is
  2. Affects the comping strategies used
  3. Then the coping strategies aim to reduce the experience of stress (sometimes called anxiety), or return the person to homeostasis

  2. Secondary
    - Evaluate available resources
    - Overcome, eliminate, or reduce stressors
