What is appraisal?
- An event (something happens or is going to happen)
Why is an event perceived and appraised?
for scope and meaning
What is the purpose of appraisal? (3)
- Involves a decision about how threatening the event is
- Affects the comping strategies used
- Then the coping strategies aim to reduce the experience of stress (sometimes called anxiety), or return the person to homeostasis
What is the different between primary and secondary appraisal? (3)
- Primary - initial appraisal
- Secondary
- Evaluate available resources
- Overcome, eliminate, or reduce stressors
What is engagement? (2)
- reappraisal of the stressor
- Examination of the success of the coping strategy
ie. oh this person might just be having a bad day
What influences appraisal? (6,8)
- Level of Education (develop skills that will help you understand problems)
- Past life experiences
- discrimination, gender constraints, trauma - Current coping style
- Values and expectations
- Beliefs
- culture influences the experience of shame about failing - Self-efficacy
What is self-efficacy?
the extent to which a person feels they can successfully solve their own problems

What does coping with challenging situations require?
- emotional regulation or the conscious ability of a person to increase or decrease the magnitude or duration of an emotional response
What is situational selection?
choosing an environment that promotes positive emotions
What is Situational modification?
- using behaviour to alter emotional impact
What is attentional deployment?
- Distracting one self (gym, tv, etc)
What is cognitive change?
Changing your thoughts
What is response modulation?
- Altering the experience of an emotion
ie. reinterpreting your emotions (sad= tired)
What is problem-focused coping? (2)
- Steps people take to deal directly with and act on the sources of stress
- Eliminate or reduce the underlying cause of the stressor
