How can we prevent sun damage?
- use SPF 15 AT LEAST
How can we protect injury from abrasive forces?
- Protect epithelium from shearing
What are interventions to reduce the risk of skin impairment? (3, 6)
- Educate on risk of photodamage and smoke damage
- Education on observation of skin
- moles - Recognize skin problems r/t CVD because it can lead to serious infections
- Mild dermatitis (inflammation of the skin), to ulceration and gangrene
- prevent trauma to skin
What are interventions to xerosis? (6)
- keep the skin hydrated
- Use skin products that help retain moisture of skin
- lubricants and oils, petroleum jelly, zinc oxide (protects skin)
Tx: treat dehydration and reduce environment stressors
- tepid bath rather than hot bath
- Environmental humidity at 60%
How can we treat pruritus? (4)
- reduce itching
- rehydration of skin
- cool compresses or baths with oatmeal
- epsom salts

- Ingrowns must be done by specialist as well

- firm soles may decrease pain associated with walking
How should we care for corns and calluses? (3)
- Oval crn pads, moleskins or lambswool, gelpads
- Daily lubrication
- Better fitting shoes

- Shoes that do not add pressure to the area
