What is urge incontinence? (2)
- most common type
- Involuntary loss of urine soon after feeling a urgent need to void
What occurs in urge incontinence in relation to the bladder muscles and making it to the bathroom? (3)
- bladder muscles are overactive
- loss of moderate to large amounts of urine prior to making it to the bathroom
- Post-residual urine
What is post residual urine?
- small amounts of urine found in the bladder
What is stress incontinence? (3)
- Involuntary loss when there is an increase in intra-abcominal pressure
- loss of 50ml or more
- post residual urine
Which sex is stress incontinence more common in? (2)
women
- related to weak pelvic muscles and shorter urethra
What is urge incontinence with high post void residual? (3)
- bladder is not emptying properly
- constant urine loss hesitancy in starting urination, slow urine stream, and infrequent urination

What is functional incontinence
- Occurs as a result of dependence or environmental barriers
What is mixed incontinence? (2)
- Usually stress and urge
- more common in older women
What are the consequences of urinary incontinence? (6)
- increased risk of falls
- increased risk of infection
- altered skin integrity
- Disturbed sleep (increased risk for mood disorder)
- quality of life
- shame/embarrassment
