Unit 3 - Age Related Changes in Smell, Taste, and Tactile Threshold + vision Flashcards
When does reduced sense of smell and ability to distinguish smell usually begin?
60 years
What is tactile threshold?
sensitivity of fingertips
Does tactile threshold increase or decrease with age? What age does it begin?
- increase
- age 20
What occurs to the external eye as you age? ie. structure (4)
- loss of orbital fat
- lower eyelid changes in relaxation
- narrowing of the tear duct and reduced production of tears
- decrease in goblet cells that provide mucin
The loss of orbital causes senile _____. What is that?
- senile ptosis
- drooping of the upper lid
Lower eyelid changes relaxation. This causes what 2 occurrences?
- ectropion
- entropion
What is ectropion?
- turning outward of the lower lid
What is entropion?
- prolonged turning inward of the inward
Decrease in the goblet cells that provide mucin causes what syndrome?
dry eye syndrome
What is dry eye syndrome? (3) ie symptoms
- irritation and inflammation
- keratoconjunctivitis
- sicca
What age-related changes occur in the internal eye (ocular)? (5)
- cornea becomes opaque and interferes with passage of light
– lens becomes stiffer and more opaque, decreased response - iris becomes less flexible
- pupil less resoponsive
- atrophy of ciliary muscles, causing less function
What are age related changes in the internal eye (intraocular) structure and NS? (4)
- thinning and sclerosis of retinal blood vessels
- Number of rods diminish and associated nerves at the periphery of the retina is reduced
- can be artherosclerosis
- degeneration of neurons in the visual cortex, causing slower processing of visual info
