Unit 5 - Cognition Flashcards
What is cognition? (2)
- a process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through experience and the senses
- mental processes involved in acquiring and processing of info that are necessary for everyday living
What are the domains of cognitive function? (7)
- perceptual motor function
- language (measures understanding)
- learning
- memory
- social cognition
- complex attention
- executive function
- orientation
- intelligence
- judgement
- perception
- psychomotor ability
- rxn time
- problem solving
What domains are included in the higher order of cognitive function? (5)
- learning
- problem solving
- reasoning
- decision making
- metacognition
What domains are included in the lower order of cognitive function? (4)
- Perception
- Pattern
- Recognition
- Attention
What scopes are in cognitive impairment?
- temporary or chronic
- mild, moderate or severe
What is intact cognition?
- exhibits cognitive behaviours that are normal for age and culture
What is cognitive impairment? (2)
- observable or measureable disturbance in one of the cognitive functions
- memory, orientation, attention, intelligence, judgment, learning ability, perception, problem solving, psychomotor ability and social intactness
What are ARC to immediate recall?
- decline in the ability to acquire new information and apply to complex tasks
What are ARC in the ability to do performance tasks?
- decline in performance abilities may be related to changes in sensory and perceptual abilities, as well as psychomotor skills
What are ARC in the ability to compensate?
- life long experience enhances problem solving and compensates for these minor changes
What does aging do to stressors in the environment?
- may increase sensitivity to stressors in the environment related to decline neurological processing
What are normal ARC in cognitive development in the older adult? (2)
- neuroplasticity
- cognitive reserve
What is neuroplasticity? (2)
- continues in the aging process
- ability of the brain to adapt to the needs of the environment
What is cognitive reserve?
- learning, complex leisure and work occupations and having positive and frequent social interactions promotes cognitive reserve
What are risk factors associated with observeable and measureable impaired cognition? (8)
- advanced age (increased risk of delirium and dementia)
- Brain trauma at any age
- disease (ie. brain tumour)
- toxins
- substance use disorder
- genetic predisposition
- depression
- opioids, steroids, psychoactive drugs, general anesthesia
