Week 12 - Thermoregulation Flashcards
How does thermoregulation impact skin integrity? (3)
- Mechanisms for thermoregulation require intact skin
- skin protects against heat loss
- sensations of the skin alert the person that they need to take precautions to prevent heat loss or promote heat loss
What is thermoregulation?
- The process of maintaining core body temperature at a near constant value
What is the temperature that the body must be kept at?
36.2-37.6 celsius
36.1-36.3 for oral
Diagram of the body’s response to hot or cold
When the core body temperature is becoming cooler, how does the body maintain temperature control? Answer in relation to the following:
1. Hypothalamus
2. Anterior pituitary
3. Thyroid gland
4. Adrenal medulla
5. Muscle tone and vasocontriction
- TSH and RH (gonadotropic hormones?)
- TSH
- Thyroxine
- Epinephrine
- Increased muscle tone and vasoconstriction

Mechanism our body uses to cool down
Changes in body temperature are caused by what 3 factors?
- strenuous activity
- Environmental exposure
- A disease process
What are protective behaviours to feeling cold? (4)
- Seek shelter
- Ingest warm fluids
- Wear warm clothing
- Increase activity
What are protective behaviours to feeling hot? (3)
- Thirst response so drink more water
- look for cool or shaded areas
- Decreased clothing
