What is personhood? (2)
- a wholistic model of the person living with Dementia to guide an understanding of personhood of the person living with dementia
- not bestowing personhood
if we treat ppl w dementia bad, we may get rising issues/upset
What is kitwood’s definition of personhood? (2)
- a standing or status that is bestowed upon one human being, by others, in the context of relationship and social being
- implies recognition, respect, and trust
Personhood of the person living with dementia needs to be recognized as a wholistic model. What are the categories affecting personhood? (7)
People’s abilities is as much related to the environment they live as it is to the ability of the brain
1. NI - neurological impairment
2. Health and physical fitness
3. Life history
4. Personality
5. Social Psychology (ie. the way doc. treated adult)
6. personhood history (guides collection of this info, see document)
How does environment affect personhood?
- The environment (physical and social) needs to support the needs of the person living with dementia to convey personhood
Why is personhood not bestowed? (4)
- people convey the stereotypes or bias in their interaction with people LWD (living with dementia)
- There is a culture of dementiaphobia and ageism
- Personhood is undermined within interaction
- People are not aware of how their words can hurt

When is personhood bestowed? (3, 8)
- respect
- person LWD are valued members of society
- recognize their age and experience to learn a lot - Relaxed pace
- creating a relaxed environment
- providing care at an appropriate pace - facilitation
- assess the person’s ability and provide support that is needed (do not overdo, or else excess disability)
