what is a peg tube?
percutaneous endoscpic gastronomy - flexable feeding tube through abdominal wall and into stomach
neutrients, fluids and medications
why would someone need a peg?
pts who are unable to move food from mouth to stomach
- neurological disorders (strone, cerebl pausy)
trauma/cancer/recent surgery
gut decompression who have malignacies causing gastric outlet or small bowl obstruction or on ileus
what are some common comlications?
pain at site
aspiration
infection of stomal site peritonitis
peristomal leakage
bleeding
transient gastroparesis or ileus
inadverdant proliferation of colon/small intestine
obstruction
gastric wall ulceration
inadverdant removal
burried bumper syndrome
can u give medications through a peg?
ask pt or carers
crush medications and put in liquid to give through peg
dont give interic coated through peg beauce it needs to be slpw relases
what to do if peg has fallen out?
dont re insert - trnasport
what to do if peg is blocked?
gentle flush
what to do if peg has migrated?
obtain information on normal depth - look for marker
transport
