Community paramedicine is an emerging model of care paramedics that have an expanded skill set to collaborate support for chronic conditions in the community and primary healthcare managment
what is community paramedicine needed?
Healthcare demand increasinf
people living longer increasing co-morbidities
ambulance requests increasing
calls for ambulances aren’t emergencies
shortage of GPs, no cover in rural areas
elderly more affect by transporting for minor conditions
what is a community paramedic?
prodominatly preventative primary healthcare
integrate into in-reach and outreach care
follow up with recent discharges or paitents with chronic conditions
follow up on identified at risk paitents
what is an extended care paramedic?
predominantly reactive
reduce ED presentations by pramedics by providing treatment/discharge or referral for appropriately idenified low acuity paitents.
provide safe and effective healthcare choices for non-acute conditions

work along side GPs in general practices
prescribing medications

Chronic pain if not different nose bleeds - if not hypertensive and controlled sprains and strains hypoglycaemia thats recovered resp infection hypertension minor injuries skin complaints - rashes wounds ear, nose, throat complications infections- UTI, cellulitis
what is the scope of practice of a community care paramedic?
- detailed history taking in mental health, social and family aspects –
- Comprehensive physical examination of all body systems
- advanced psychosocial assessment
- point of care testing devices and screening tools
what advanced physical assessments can a community paramedic provide?
head, eyes, ears nose and throat examination- cardiac and cordite sound examinations, complete skin assembles, pyrometry, advanced musculoskeletal assents, advance euro assessments
what advances psychosocial assessments can a community paramedic do for paitents?
falls risks, palliative care decisions, dialysis follow up, dietary evaluation, aged care reassessment, home medication review, diabetic follow up and assesment/counselling
what point of care testing deviceds/screening tools can community paramedics use?
urinalysis glucose diabetic monitoring blood tests such as CBCs, chemesteris, INRs, cardiac markers sonography stool guaiac or foetal occult blood test corneal abrasion evaluation other diagonistc tests
