who is this CPG intended for?
adult paitents who have sustained minor, superficial burns from a thermal source
what are the comommon characteristics of superficial burns?
apperence: dry, red, no blister, skin not broken
senstation may be painful
cirulation normal or increased
colour red warm
blisters none
what are the common characteristics of full thickness or partial thockness burns?
apperence: pale pink/white/black
sensation increased to none
circulation rapid capilary refil to none
colour pink, white, charred black
blisters yes partial, no full thickness
what general care should be provided?
provide cooling for 20 minutes under running water and clense with gauze and saline after
if avalible and skin not broken apply soothing gel
no other dressings
pt refered to gp with 24 hours
when should this CPG not be used?
burns involving sensitive areas such as face, hands, feet, major joints, gentiles or circumfrential burns of limb or chest
partial or full thickness burns
smoke inhalation
chemical, eletrical orradiation burns
suspected non-accedental
pain unable to be controlled with oral analgesics
co morbidities that would impact healing
if the pain has been controlled after 20 minutes of coolingwhat should be done?
clean wound with nromal saline
consider applying non-perfumed moisteriser
concder pracetamol
refer to primary care provider within 24 hours
provide infomration and make sure they understand before departing
