What are vitamins?
Vitamins are nutrients that are only needed in small amounts, but if you do not eat them you can get ill.
Why is Vitamin A important?
Vitamin A is needed to help your eyes to work well, so that your vision is good. It is particularly important for helping us see when it is quite dark. It also helps your white blood cells to fight pathogens.
What does a deficiency of Vitamin A cause?
A Vitamin A deficiency may cause people to not be able to see anything at night, or night bindness.
What are some good sources of Vitamin A?
Vitamin A is found in green vegetables, carrots and squash(such a pumpkin), fruits, dairy products(foods made from milk) and some kinds of fish.
Why is Vitamin C important?
Vitamin C helps the skin to stay strong and to heal quickly if it is damaged, and it keeps blood vessels and bones healthy.
What does a deficiency of Vitamin C cause?
People with a Vitamin C deficiency can get an illness called scurvy. A person with scurvy feels weak and may have swollen, bleeding gums.
What are some good sources of Vitamin C?
Vitamin C is found in fresh fruits and vegetables, particularly citrus fruits such. Potatoes and colourful berries are also rich in Vitamin C.
What is an example of people who tend to have had a deficiency of Vitamin C?
Sailors on long sea voyages in the past, before anyone knew about Vitamin C, often got scurvy as they had no fresh fruits or vegetables to eat.
Why is Vitamin D important?
Vitamin D is needed for strong bones and teeth. It helps the body to absorb calcium from the food that you eat.
What does a deficiency of Vitamin D cause?
In children, a deficiency of Vitamin D can cause an illness called rickets, in which their bones can stop growing normally.
What are some good sources of Vitamin D?
Oily fish is probably the best source of Vitamin D. Although, for most people, Vitamin D does not come from the food they eat but instead, is made in the skin when sunlight falls onto it.
What is an example of people who tend to have a deficiency of Vitamin D?
People who never go outdoors, or who never get any sunlight on their skin, most likely living in a country far from the equator or where there is not much sunlight, might get a deficiency of Vitamin D.
